Our technicians are the industry's
clutching specialists, racing and riding with our products
year round. They know snowmobile and ATV drivelines inside and out
- clutches, chains, sprockets, helixes, u-joints and more. And
they test and use all the major brands - Polaris, Arctic Cat, Ski-Doo,
Yamaha, Kawasaki, Suzuki & Honda. So, when it comes to snowmobile
& ATV performance, our techs have the answers.
We plan on regularly presenting
technical tips for snowmobiles and ATV's. See the list on the left for
our current Tech Tips archive list. Select any tip in the list to
view it. Feel free to print these Tech Tips out to save for future
use, or check back here regularly to view new tips as they are
added.
Remember, these are strictly Tech
Tips.
Feel free to contact our technicians directly with any part-specific,
or application-specific questions. Call 218-829-6036 for assistance.
Tech Tip #3: Sprockets and Chains
- Sizes and Styles
The easiest way to find out what
size sprocket you have is to count the number of teeth on the
outside diameter. This is called your tooth size. Sprocket width
can normally be checked by counting the number of plates across
the chain including the outside plates. The number of plates
across equals the sprocket and chain width.
If you don't have a chain to
count, 11 wide sprockets measure .530", 13 wide = .640", 15 wide =
.750", and 3/4 HYVO = .660" on the flat surface or 1.00" total
width with hub.
On 98 and newer Polaris
snowmobiles, there is a new style of chain and sprocket called 3/4
wide HYVO. HYVO sprockets and chains are not interchangeable with
any other style.
Chain length can be figured out
by counting the outside plates on one side and multiplying that
number by two. For example, if you count 36 outside plates,
36x2=72, you would have a 72 length chain.
